ACT Hospital and Health Services awarded national accreditation for quality and safety

ACT Health has been awarded unconditional three year accreditation for acute services, community health services, day procedure services, dental services, mental health services and sub-acute services by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, Minister for Health Simon Corbell announced today.

A full survey of ACT Health services against the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (National Standards) resulted in unconditional accreditation with no exclusions.

ACT Health was recognised with the highest rating available, Met with Merit, against 11 actions across the Standards of Governance, Partnering with Consumers and Pressure Injuries.

“I am very pleased with this excellent result for ACT Health which shows that the people of the ACT and surrounding region are serviced by a top quality health system that meets all of the relevant safety and quality standards,” Mr Corbell said.

“ACT Health is a high-quality organisation that provides high-quality services Canberrans and their regional neighbours. I welcome this well-deserved recognition of for the hard-working staff that make the ACT health system one of the best in the Australia.”

The current National Standards were introduced in January 2013 and have been developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care to support the introduction of the Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation Scheme. They provide a nationally consistent set of standards that all health facilities offering acute services must be accredited against.

“A team of 10 ACHS surveyors reviewed ACT Health services against the 256 actions within the national standards and were impressed by the commitment and leadership shown by the ACT Health executive team and the culture of accountability demonstrated throughout the organisation,” Mr Corbell said.

“The surveyors highly commended ACT Health on being a consumer-focused organisation and were impressed by the level of input consumers have within the organisation. They commented that ACT Health ‘is a learning organisation in which staff are receptive to new knowledge and willing to change clinical behaviors to ensure the delivery of best practice and contemporaneous patient care standards’.

“The result is commendable and is a testament to the commitment of ACT Health to provide safe, high quality and equitable health care.

“The focus on effective planning, continuous improvement and this government’s commitment to providing appropriate funding for health infrastructure and services has played a significant part in the success of delivering a high quality service to a large population with diverse and often complex health needs.”
