New data helps meet challenges in the ACT justice system

Released 19/11/2015

The addition of domestic and family violence and alcohol and other drug-related crime data to the latest Criminal Justice Statistical Profile will assist in identifying challenges facing the ACT’s criminal justice system, Attorney-General Simon Corbell announced today.

The Criminal Justice Statistical Profile, which brings together up to date statistics from across the criminal justice system using information from front-line organisations and government agencies, was tabled today in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

“The addition of data from 5 new agencies, including 2 not-for-profit organisations, to the statistical profile will assist our policymakers in identifying trends and issues that affect our community,” Mr Corbell said.

“By including these new statistics we will improve the government’s ability to make effective, evidence-led policy and programming decisions.

“I welcome the inclusion of data from non-government agencies, the ACT Sobering-up Shelter and the Domestic Violence Crisis Service, as it will provide a fuller picture of the criminal justice system and crime that does not always get reported to the police or courts.”

The expanded statistical profile will assist major initiatives including the Justice Reform and Justice Reinvestment Strategies, and assessment of opportunities to reduce alcohol-related harm as identified in the Liquor Act review and the Draft ACT Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Strategy 2016.

“Alcohol and other drugs have been involved in 31% of police apprehensions and 26% of charges over the past 5 years, the latest statistical profile has shown,” Mr Corbell said.

“These statistics clearly detail some of the impacts alcohol and other drug use is having on our community. We know that alcohol-related crime has significant impacts right across our justice system, from frontline police activities right through to our courts and prison.
