Released 12/10/2017

A guided tour of Canberra’s little known Bendora Arboretum will run next Sunday (23 October 2017) giving people a chance to discover the historical and natural importance of our oldest arboretum.

The free tour will be jointly hosted by ACT Parks and Conservation Ranger Brandon Galpin and Friends of ACT Trees member Dr John Turnbull.

“The Bendora Arboretum is located five kilometres from Bulls Head in Namadgi National Park and is a great bush walking spot,” Mr Galpin said.

“Bendora is the sole surviving arboreta in the Brindabella Ranges and was established in 1940 as a scientific trial for commercial softwood viability. It is home to more than 40 exotic species in over 50 plots, including the critically endangered Clan William Cypress from South Africa.

“Not many people actually know that it exists and is easily accessible from the city, so these guided tours provide a rare opportunity to see what the National Arboretum will look like in years to come.”

“Bendora Arboretum as a hidden gem and well worth the journey through the Namadgi National Park to get there. Now in the first burst of spring growth the vivid greens captivate the eye and the stunning location lend the place a magic quality,” Mr Galpin said.
