ANZAC Day at the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival

Released 21/04/2023

The Canberra and Region Heritage Festival is commemorating ANZAC Day with a series of events sharing the stories of our nation’s service men and women.

Canberrans and visitors are invited to join an evening of wartime music and poetry, take part in a lantern-lit peace vigil, hear local stories from both World Wars, or learn about the little-known role of the Mount Stromlo Observatory in WWII.

The following events will offer a meaningful and respectful way to mark ANZAC Day 2023:

Sunday 23 April

Military History Vignettes will host How Canberra Won the War - the Optical Munitions Branch, a walk and talk at Mt Stromlo to explore the story of the Optical Munitions Branch and its role in WWII. This is a paid event.

Monday 24 April

A Chorus of Women will host the Anzac Eve Peace Vigil. This is the 13th annual lantern-lit peace vigil and a beautiful Canberra tradition reimagining our country’s commemoration of war in a heart-warming community ceremony. This is a free event.

Tuesday 25 April – ANZAC Day

The Parish of St John's will host Stories for ANZAC Day to commemorate ANZAC Day with a 'Gunfire Breakfast' following the Dawn Service. From midday, hear local stories from both World Wars. Entry includes a visit to the Schoolhouse Museum and afternoon tea. This is a paid event.

ACT Hub and Soldier On will also commemorate ANZAC Day by hosting The Poetry of War, an evening of wartime music and poetry from The Great War through to today.

The Canberra and Region Heritage Festival is proud to offer these events as a way to remember those who served and lost their life in service.

The festival takes place from 11 – 30 April and offers more than 150 events that celebrate the heritage and history of Canberra and surrounds.

More information is available on the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival website.
