Celebrating 40 years of the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival

Released 16/03/2023

The Canberra and Region Heritage Festival is returning to Canberra and surrounds from 11-30 April 2023 for the festival's 40th anniversary.

Over three weeks, the festival will feature over 160 events and activities, providing a unique opportunity for the community to engage with our region's rich cultural history.

Minister for Heritage Rebecca Vassarotti said that the festival is an incredible opportunity to learn about and engage with the region we live in, and the people that live here.

"The ACT Government is thrilled to once again bring the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival to the ACT and surrounding regions," Minister Vassarotti said.

"The festival provides a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors together to learn, share and celebrate Canberra's wonderful heritage.

"Running for 40 years now, this is one of the best events of the year and I really encourage anyone with an interest in local history and culture to get out and see the amazing things that Canberra has on offer."

Festival Coordinator Linda Roberts said this year continues many of the traditions and events that make the festival so popular, while bringing in some new experiences to make the month of April better than ever.

"This year's theme is Sharing Stories, aiming to awaken a sense of place of place and belonging as well as create opportunities for diverse voices to share their histories," Ms Roberts said

"The second week of the school holidays sees the return of Kids Week, featuring a variety of child-friendly activities that encourage young people to engage with history and heritage.

"Don't miss the opportunity to experience the rich heritage of Canberra and the surrounding region by participating in one or more events during this lovely month in Autumn.

"The government thanks and acknowledges all community and volunteer groups who are scheduled to deliver events during the festival for the benefit of Canberrans and those of the broader region."

Don't miss this opportunity to explore, learn, and share stories at the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival. Visit the ACT Environment website for the full program of events and activities.
