46 new ACT Rural Fire Service volunteers

Released 12/11/2018

Tonight I welcomed 46 new volunteers into the ACT Rural Fire Service (ACTRFS) and also acknowledged the valuable contribution employers and self-employed volunteers make to the community at a ceremony held at The Deck, Regatta Point.

The newest recruits who recently completed a Certification in Bushfire Operations, brings the total number of ACTRFS volunteer members to 448.

Tonight I also presented a Certificate of Recognition to employers to acknowledge the vital contribution they make to the ACTRFS, especially by releasing volunteers to attend incidents such as the recent Pierces Creek bushfire.

Firefighting operations to extinguish the Pierces Creek bushfire ran over many business days, and involved more than 100 firefighters. Releasing employees during work hours to respond to emergencies is a truly selfless contribution worthy of recognition.

Volunteers who are self-employed also bear the costs of being unable to work when attending an emergency and this has a direct impact on their business.

It is the generosity and understanding of those employers and the self-employed that allows our volunteer members to care and protect for our community in times of need.

Bolstering our volunteer numbers and enhancing our relationship with employers is more important than ever as we head into what has been predicted as a hazardous bushfire season.
