Canberrans are being encouraged to make smart choices about alcohol, drug use, and road safety throughout the festive season to help us all stay safe this summer.

ACT Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman and Chief Police Officer for the ACT Ray Johnson today launched the 2018-19 ‘Safe Summer’ campaign.

Community safety is everyone’s responsibility. The Government and ACT Policing are working together with venue operators and transport operators to reduce anti-social behaviour and illegal activity in Canberra.

The ‘Safe Summer’ campaign makes it easier for everyone to play their part in ensuring our roads, streets, and venues are safe for all.

Once again ACT Policing will continue to work 24 hours a day every day of the busy summer period. Officers will be patrolling licenced premises and entertainment precincts, and on Canberra’s roads, targeting alcohol and drug related incidents, anti-social behaviour and impaired driving.

Rates of alcohol-fuelled assaults in the ACT fell by 29.2 per cent from summer 2016-17 to 2017-18. This improves upon the 11 per cent decrease in this category of assault between the ‘Safe Summer’ campaign periods commencing in 2015 and 2016.

There was a 25 per cent fall in Criminal Infringement Notices between the last two ‘Safe Summer’ campaigns. Forty two infringements were issued for summer 2017-18, compared with 59 that were issued during 2016-17.

In addition to patrolling licenced premises, police will again maintain a highly visible presence on Canberra’s roads throughout the campaign. This will focus on speeding, reckless driving, and driving under the influence, and contribute to both ‘Safe Summer’ and the ACT’s ‘Vision Zero’ strategy.

ACT Policing’s ‘Safe Summer’ campaign will run until through to the end of February 2019. For more information visit: www.police.act.gov.au/safesummer
