Applications for ACT environment grants now open

Released 22/05/2018

Local environment groups can apply for grants up to $50,000 as part of the 2018–19 round of the ACT Environment Grants program, Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mick Gentleman announced today.

“The ACT Environment Grants Program is celebrating its 21st year of helping individuals and groups with projects that strengthen on-ground environmental restoration and rehabilitation,” Minister Gentleman said.

“Canberra is renowned as the bush capital and we are fortunate to have many local groups who take great pride in helping look after it, and who can use the support provided by the grants.

“Over $200,000 is available in this year’s program, so I encourage the community to put forward project ideas and participate in environmental work that helps care for, restore and rehabilitate Canberra’s natural spaces.

“The grants are a successful way to raise community awareness about our natural treasures and to foster community engagement,” Minister Gentleman said.

The grants, which are open to individuals and groups, fund projects up to $50,000.

Projects funded last year encouraged community participation in caring for wildlife, on ground activities such as revegetation, erosion control and weed management, and recording species through citizen science.

Funding priorities for 2018–19 include:

  • enhancing condition and connectivity of ecosystems;
  • managing threats to biodiversity, such as managing weeds and/or pest animals;
  • protecting native plants and animals; enhancing biodiversity in urban areas;
  • engaging the community in on-ground environmental work;
  • connecting people to nature; and
  • improving opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents through ‘Connecting to Country’.

“I encourage Canberrans to submit their applications. I look forward to seeing the ideas Canberrans put forward, and to receiving innovative and effective project ideas to restore and improve the condition of our environment,” Minister Gentleman said.
