City and Gateway Framework in place

Released 19/12/2018 - Joint media release

A long-term planning vision for the gateway into the nation’s capital was today launched by Senator for ACT, Zed Seselja and ACT Minister for Planning and Land Management, Mick Gentleman.

The heart of our city is transforming, including construction of light rail and increasing urban infill within the existing city fabric. As Canberra continues to grow and develop, we need to plan and manage changes to the Northbourne Avenue and Federal Highway corridor in an effective and sustainable way.

The City and Gateway Urban Design Framework released today recognises the significant opportunities for urban renewal, growth and investment in the city centre, gateway corridor and the inner north of Canberra. The Framework helps meet the objectives of the ACT Planning Strategy for Canberra to become a sustainable, competitive and equitable city that respects Canberra as a city in the landscape.

Senator Seselja said the Framework’s vision preserves and enhances the corridor’s valued landscape character, befitting the nation’s capital.

Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories Sussan Ley said the policy will guide the development of high quality buildings and landscape - to ensure the importance of the Northbourne Avenue and the Federal Highway is maintained as a key approach to the National Capital.

Minister Gentleman said that the Framework has a strong, people-first approach, with a focus on design excellence, giving priority to pedestrians, and encouraging active travel and public transport use.

Key principles of the Framework will be implemented by an amendment to the National Capital Plan and variation to the Territory Plan, which are expected to be available for further public consultation in early 2019. The community has been a strong partner in the development of the Framework and we encourage Canberrans to continue contributing to the next steps of the Framework’s implementation.

The final City and Gateway Urban Design Framework is available at YourSay website.
