Ongoing improvements in ACT Ambulance Service

Released 13/12/2018

Canberrans will benefit from a better Ambulance Service thanks to significant improvements delivered by an ongoing cultural reform program.

Over the past three years, ACTAS has gone through a comprehensive and exhausting process to honestly examine its strengths and weaknesses as an organisation.

Today I was honoured to acknowledge the contribution of Mr David Place as the independent Chair of the ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS) Blueprint for Change Oversight Committee by presenting him with a Meritorious Service Award.

A senior and experienced ambulance manager from the South Australian Ambulance Service, Mr Place has provided independent oversight of this project since its inception in mid-2015.

Mr Place’s leadership as Chair of this Oversight Committee has been achieved a significant and positive change in working relationships between Ambulance Service management, the workforce and their industrial representatives.

Positive changes in workplace culture have been underpinned by programs such as the Peer Support Network, psychological first aid training for first responders, safe and respectful workplace conversations and national registration for paramedics.

There is still more to do and we will continue to work together with ACTAS to deliver continuous improvements to our Ambulance Service through the Blueprint for Change project.

As ACTAS enters the next phase, it is well positioned to continue deliver the remaining outcomes of the project. Oversight responsibilities will now transition to an internal Governance and Compliance Committee.

The Blueprint for Change provides the framework for the ACTAS to enhance professionalism by improving cultural standards and addressing workforce concerns around trust, conflict resolution and leadership.

I would like to sincerely thank all ACTAS staff and the Transport Workers Union for their contribution to the Blueprint for Change and continuing to work so effectively during these busy times to protect and care for our community.
