ACT Rural Fire Service vehicle celebrates Ngunnawal culture

Released 12/09/2019

Ngunnawal artwork is being permanently displayed on an ACT Rural Fire Service (ACTRFS) truck to celebrate pride within the local Ngunnawal community.

An ACTRFS Tidbinbilla tanker has been chosen because it’s the closest brigade to the newly established Aboriginal Fire Management Zone located in Tidbinbilla Nature Park.

The artwork has been given the Ngunnawal name Mhuuga Daramoolen Yharramuulun, which translates to Snake Spirit Dreaming. It tells a story of the land of Tidbinbilla and the relationship ACTRFS has with the area and includes fingerprints from members of the Tidbinbilla Brigade.

Lead artist Richie Allan has also previously created artwork for an ACT State Emergency Service vehicle. The close relationship between ACTRFS and Ngunnawal artists has helped make Richie’s latest vision a reality.

The ACT Government is committed to supporting a positive relationship with the Territory’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Our ACT Emergency Services Agency already has an existing number of vehicles which display an array of different types of artwork, including:

  • ACT Ambulance Service - Commemorative to Helen Petrou
  • ACT Ambulance Service - Commemorative to Terry Djordjevic
  • ACT Fire & Rescue - White Ribbon
