ACT State Emergency Service welcomes new graduates

Released 26/09/2019

Eighty two new volunteers will join the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) working to support the Canberra community during the storm season.

The new recruits are graduating from a five-month training college and several also completed a nine-day intensive storm and water damage training course, the first of its kind in Australia.

During training, the recruit volunteers developed their skills in storm water damage remediation, land-based floodwater rescue, safety and first aid.

They are now prepared to be first responders to incidents involving floods and storms, as well as provide crucial support to other emergency services.

These graduates can now undertake further new opportunities including becoming an ACTSES educator and providing incident management support.

Congratulations and welcome our new ACT State Emergency Service graduates, who bring the total number of ACTSES volunteer numbers to 355.

This is a timely reminder for Canberrans to make sure their property is prepared for storms and extreme weather. Help keep your household safe by following a few simple steps available at: esa.act.gov.au/cbr-be-emergency-ready.

Media are welcome to attend the graduation ceremony this evening.
