A new awareness campaign is educating and encouraging Canberrans to reduce their water use during dry conditions this summer.
Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mick Gentleman said the ‘Care for Water’ campaign, led by Icon Water, encourages the ACT community to become ‘water wise’ as the region heads into a hot and dry summer.
“We are asking everyone across the ACT and in nearby NSW to embrace the ‘Care for Water’ campaign by making their own personal promise to save water in whatever way they can,” Mr Gentleman said.
“It could be as simple as investing in a water saving trigger nozzle for your hose, fixing a leaking tap or taking a shorter shower. If we all do a little and become more conscious about the way we use water now, our actions can help delay the need for temporary water restrictions in the future.”
“To care for water in Canberra, I pledge to have 4-minute showers, turn off the tap when I brush my teeth and wash my clothes with a full load.”
The Icon Water campaign is being supported by the ACT Government and the Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council.
Icon Water’s Managing Director Ray Hezkial said the while the ACT has a secure water supply, dry conditions are expected to continue over the summer and will put pressure on the system due to low rainfall and high demand.
“We can’t make it rain but we can work together, change our habits and help secure our water supply while conditions are challenging,” Mr Hezkial said.
“It’s also a timely reminder that while we are not in water restrictions, we have had permanent water conservation measures in place in the ACT and Queanbeyan since 2010.
“These measures set out rules around garden and lawn watering, pool filling, cleaning with water and other water uses.
“Reducing our water use will help to ease pressure on our dam water levels and will also help us to save energy, money and the environment.”
