Celebrating 30 years of Parkcare

Released 08/11/2019

ACT Parks and Conservation Service’s volunteer led Parkcare program will tomorrow celebrate 30 years of achievements helping to enhance our region’s natural environment.

Parkcare groups play a critical role in protecting, rehabilitating and helping the community appreciate ACT parks, nature reserves and cultural sites.

Their commitment has made a huge difference to the ACT landscape, with over 800 passionate volunteers clocking up more 32,000 hours in the last year alone.

Volunteers help rehabilitate the land and assist important projects such as feral animal control, rabbit burrow mapping, invasive weed control, and help map parks and reserves in the digital space.

Over the last 30 years they have developed a strong connection with the land, shaped by the ups and downs of working in the natural environment.

They have experienced firsthand the effects caused by climate change including extreme weather, water stress and fire. Our volunteers remain impressively positive, engaged, and committed to caring for our environment.

ParkCare now includes different ways of volunteering including VisitorAssist volunteer guides, RangerAssist volunteers working side by side with staff and WildlifeAssist volunteers contributing to our threatened species recovery program.

The communication and information shared between staff and volunteers is invaluable to our reserve management.

I thank the environmental and community legacy Parkcare volunteers have contributed to the ACT and the park rangers, managers and coordinators that have worked alongside the community.
