Rural firefighting volunteers recognised for service to Canberra

Released 08/07/2019

ACT Rural Fire Service (ACTRFS) volunteers have been formally recognised for their longstanding dedication, commitment and service to the Canberra community.

Twenty two ACTRFS members were awarded medals for long service across 10, 20 and 30 years.

Our volunteer firefighters play a vital role protecting Canberra and the surrounding regions, especially during the bushfire season. I thank all ACTRFS volunteers for their selfless efforts and the work they do here in our community and across the globe.

Over the last 18 months, ACTRFS deployed staff and volunteers to Canada, USA and Queensland to help protect lives, property and the environment.

This year, four volunteers also received the Chief Officer Commendation Award for diligent service and two for exemplary service. This award recognises their outstanding and diligent service to the ACT Rural Fire Service and to the ACT community.

ACTRFS saw 68 new volunteer firefighters complete formal bushfire training during 2017-18.

I joined Acting ESA Commission Georgeina Whelan and ACT Rural Fire Service Chief Officer Joe Murphy on Friday evening to acknowledge and congratulate the award recipients and their families.

Images and interviews with recipients are available on request.
