Helping our landscapes on World Environment Day

Released 05/06/2020

The ACT Government has today showcased the restoration projects at the Lower Cotter Catchment to help celebrate World Environment Day.

Minister for the Environment and HeritageMick Gentleman said the $350,000 project was important to the community because of the many benefits to both the environment and the economy.

"We have had teams out here planting native seedlings, removing invasive weeds and fixing soil erosion to help restore the landscape and protect our drinking water catchment," Minister Gentleman said.

"Today is World Environment Day and this year's theme is 'it's Time for Nature' so we're showcasing some of the fantastic work that's been conducted in recent weeks.

"We know that in recent years our landscape has faced both extended dry conditions and the summer bushfires.

"As these areas recover, now is a perfect time to celebrate Canberra's unique landscape and the projects like this one that help our ecosystems thrive.

"This project has been part of the Government's fast-tracked infrastructure spending to keep Canberra working through the COVID-19 public health emergency.

"We are supporting local businesses and stimulating the ACT economy by working on projects that can start quickly and rely on local workers.

"On this project we have had over 75 pairs of boots on the ground helping us protect our catchment and native species while also improving Canberra's water security through improved catchment health."
