A new online learning platform has been developed by the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) to ensure all Canberra kids have access to important fire safety education.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman launched the new program with ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R).
"ACT Fire & Rescue usually deliver their fire safety education in the classroom to students throughout the ACT, however due to COVID-19 restrictions they have adapted their program and brought it online," Minister Gentleman said.
"This gives ACT children and their families access to valuable fire safety education that has been aligned with the Australian Curriculum anytime, anywhere via the ESA website.
"The online worksheets and activities are designed to ensure children feel confident, safe and prepared in the event of a fire emergency.
"While designed for younger Canberrans, these fire safety messages are important for people of all ages to understand."
The fire safety education program includes multiple educational videos including:
- Understanding the difference between good and bad fires
- Basic smoke alarm awareness and how to exit your home safely including "crawl down low and go, go go" and "stop, drop, cover and roll", and
- Who to call in an emergency and ensuring you have a home evacuation plan.
"Fire safety can be a scary topic for both parents and children, however this program will help ensure children are equipped with the skills and knowledge to contribute towards the safety of their family and home," said A/g ACTF&R Chief Officer Chris Zeitlhofer.
