New plan to better support Corrections Officers

Released 17/12/2020

Corrections Officers will be better supported through a new plan to address challenges at the Alexander Maconochie Centre and Court Transport Unit.

Minister for Corrections Mick Gentleman will be available for comment this afternoon:

TIME:  1:30pm
WHERE: Civic Square

Minister Gentleman said a range of challenges and gaps had been highlighted in recent reports and discussions with staff.

“Supporting corrections staff is a key priority for me and the ACT Government. It's clear that recommendations from recent reports need to be advanced in a way that is supportive of staff and promotes a discussion around culture at AMC,” Minister Gentleman said.

“I have taken steps to form an oversight committee to bring ACTCS staff, the Union and oversight bodies together to contribute to finding solutions.

“The new committee will develop a blueprint for change within the AMC and CTU and oversee the implementation of accepted recommendations from recent and upcoming reports and inquiries.

“This will include an urgent focus on bringing training capabilities up to date and examining staffing levels and rostering to ensure staff development and wellbeing.

“We are looking for an independent Chair for the committee, which will include representatives from the Official Visitors, the Human Rights Commission, the CPSU, the AMC General Manager and an executive from the Directorate.

“An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander delegate will also join the committee. This will give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander detainees a voice and build on our nation-leading introduction of the Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service to the AMC.

“We want to provide staff with a genuine way forward through a comprehensive process that builds consultation around management and implementation of policy and procedures.

“I recognise the impact of staffing pressures on detainees and access to detainee services. We are working to implement immediate changes to address these challenges, including the recruitment of more Corrections Officers.

“Visitation restrictions have also been eased in line with health advice and in response to detainee concerns, which have been relayed through our Official Visitors.”
