Auditor General finds Canberra’s public art well maintained

Minister for the Arts and Community Events Gordon Ramsay today welcomed the findings of an Auditor General’s report examining how public art is managed in Canberra.

The ACT Auditor-General’s report into Selected ACT Government Agencies’ management of public art found the Government is delivering on its commitment to provide high quality public art, as part of the wider strategy for promoting and enhancing the arts in Canberra.

“The ACT Government knows how important art is to Canberrans, which is why we invest so strongly not only in new public art, but also the maintenance of our existing public art works,” Minister Ramsay said.

“We are lucky in Canberra to have a strong and vibrant arts scene that enhances the livability of the city and promotes diversity and social inclusion.”

Public art contributes to our city’s identity. Maintaining our diverse portfolio of public art works, and making sure all Canberrans can enjoy high quality public art is important to the ACT Government.

“Public art is owned by everyone in the community, so it’s important we all remember to look after our shared assets,” Minister Ramsay said.

“We will continue to work closely with key stakeholders across Government including ACT Health, the Cultural Facilities Cooperation and Transport Canberra and City Services to ensure our public art works are well managed.”

The report notes that those ACT Government agencies with responsibility for the governance and maintenance of public art are doing a good job.

The report makes six recommendations for ways in which the management of public art across the Territory could be further improved, including implementing a public arts strategic plan for the Territory, updating the public art database and ensuring works are not damaged by events or construction activity.

“The ACT Government welcomes the report and looks forward to working with all government stakeholders to consider each of the recommendations and their implementation. We will provide the ACT Government response to the report in due course,” Minister Ramsay concluded.
