New voices to represent Canberra Veterans’ community

Released 07/09/2017

Minister for Veterans and Seniors Gordon Ramsay today announced the appointment of five new members to the ACT Veterans’ Advisory Council.

“The Veterans’ Advisory Council (VAC) comprises ten diverse and highly experienced community members with a material interest in issues affecting all current and former Australian Defence Force personnel and their families in the ACT,” Minister Ramsay said.

“I’m thrilled to welcome the five new members—BRIG Alison Creagh CSC (Chair), Chad Hodgens, Karlie Brand, David Munro and Rob Marshall.

“I’m also pleased to announce the reappointment of VAC council members Gerard Pratt (as the new Deputy Chair), MAJGEN Dave Chalmers AO CSC, Pat McCabe OAM, Dr Kathryn Spurling and Suzanne McGuinness-Butler.

“I’d also like to thank the outgoing members of the VAC – especially the outgoing Chair John King – for the contribution they have made.”

Newly appointed Chair BRIG Alison Creagh CSC is extremely well-qualified for the role, having been a Member of the Australian War Memorial Council, a Non-Executive Director and Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of The Road Home-The Repat Foundation, a Non-Executive Director of The Hospital Research Foundation and a Vice Chair of the Australian Peacekeeping Memorial Project Committee.

“Our other appointees to the Council are also similarly and impressively qualified,” Minister Ramsay said.

The VAC is responsible for:

  • Research, monitoring and provision of advice about matters relating to veterans, including issues relating to mental and physical health, welfare, disability, ageing, employment, social inclusion and participation;
  • Provision of a forum for the veterans’ community to act as a contact point to and communicate directly with the ACT Government;
  • Promotion of the wellbeing of the veterans’ community; and
  • Promotion of cooperation and collaboration across organisations dealing with issues affecting the veterans’ community.

“The veterans’ community is inclusive of people with a direct link to defence service or a veteran. Widows, partners, former partners, children, parents, siblings and relatives of ex-servicemen and women will all benefit from the expertise on this council,” Minister Ramsay concluded.

Contact can be made with the Veterans Advisory Council through the Secretariat on 6205 2598.
