Released 29/08/2018

Minister for the Arts and Cultural Events Gordon Ramsay today launched Contour 556, Canberra’s biennial public art and performance event.

“Initiated and driven by local curators and landscape architects, Harris Hobbs Public Projects, Contour 556 will run from 5-28 October,” Minister Ramsay said.

“This free event will feature public sculpture and performance work from 60 talented local, national and international artists and I am thrilled to see so many local artists represented in the program”

Forty-nine sculptures will be temporarily exhibited on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin from Henry Rolland Park in West Basin, along the southern lake shore from Commonwealth Avenue Bridge to the Kingston Foreshore and on Aspen Island.

Artists participating in Contour 556 will use performance, storytelling, song, poetry, projection, text as well as traditional sculpture, exploring stories of Australian political, cultural and physical history.

“Neil Hobbs and Karina Harris’ enthusiasm and passion for bringing public art and performance to the community has manifested in this unique locally conceived and delivered event.”

“The ACT Government was delighted to provide $30,000 from the ACT Event Fund 2018 and $30,000 from artsACT 2018 Activity Funding to Contour 556 to support Canberra artists to exhibit their works. The City Renewal Authority also contributed $21,600 to support enlivening the city’s spaces.”
