Distinguished service of DPP Jon White SC recognised

Released 15/10/2018

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay has warmly recognised Jon White SC for his decade long service to the ACT DPP.

Mr White has served as the Territory’s Director of Public Prosecutions since 2008 and led the office through a period of significant change.

“Mr White’s experience and leadership has been of great benefit to the DPP during the past decade,” Minister Ramsay said.

“The DPP plays a vital role in the ACT justice system working closely with victims. As our population has grown, more people have depended on the office to achieve justice on behalf of the community.

“In the past ten years, Mr White has worked to ensure prosecutions occur as promptly as possible. He has worked with the Government and Supreme Court to improve criminal listing processes to significantly reduce the number of cases with long waiting times.

“Mr White has also made a significant contribution to law reform in the ACT, providing clear and valuable advice to Government, including most recently to strengthen family violence legislation. His advice on matters arising out of the Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sex Abuse has been instrumental to the Government and continues to shape our response.

“The ACT DPP performs more functions overall than any other DPP State or Territory, and under Mr White’s leadership the office has responded to the increasing number in an efficient way.

“I would like to personally thank Mr White for his distinguished service to the people of the AC T and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Mr White graduated from the Australian National University in 1981. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours).

Mr White joined the Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in 1985 and became Director of Public Prosecutions for the ACT in 2008.

He was appointed a Senior Counsel in 2014.
