Dive into pool safety this summer

Released 07/12/2018

Canberrans with backyard pools are urged to be extra vigilant this summer and join the ACT Government’s ‘backyard lifeguard’ campaign.

Being your own ‘backyard lifeguard’ at home is an important concept for the Canberra community to embrace. We all need to be extra vigilant in supervising children in and around pools.

Adult supervision, coupled with appropriate educational awareness about the potential dangers of swimming pools is the best way to keep our kids safe this summer.

Whilst the summer holiday season is a great time to enjoy a swim, it’s also a great time to take a few minutes to check your pool meets current safety standards via our checklist, which is available online at www.act.gov.au/backyardlifeguard.

The checklist allows pool owners to conduct a self-assessment on the level of safety in and around their pool area.

As a community, we are all responsible for safety around pools and together, by promoting education and awareness about pool safety, Canberrans can have more fun in the sun this summer.

Royal Life Saving ACT, KidsAlive, Kidsafe, and the Swimming Pool and Spa Association Australia are all key supporters of the Backyard Lifeguard campaign.
