Veterans’ wellbeing at heart of grants

A plethora of initiatives promoting the health and wellbeing of ACT veterans totalling more than $62,000 has been announced by Minister for Veterans Gordon Ramsay today.

Blacksmithing, singing, rowing, mental health counselling and carpentry are just some of the activities on the agenda for serving and former members of the Australian Defence Force and their families.

“I’d like to commend all the organisations involved for their work in promoting the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families in our community,” Minister Ramsay said.

“I am glad to see both veterans organisations and others exploring opportunities to ensure veterans and their families are fully supported.

“I would also like to see new partnerships and links created across the veteran community to continue this good work into the future.”

The 2018 Veterans Grants have been awarded to the following projects:

  • The Cuppacumbalong Foundation: Veterans' Families Blacksmithing Program - $10,000 to run a veterans' Families Blacksmithing Program during school holidays in 2019.
  • The Ex-Defence Integration Team: EDIT Course - $8,675 to run five day intensive courses to equip veterans with skills to help them transition from the ADF to new careers.
  • Vietnam Veterans and Veterans Federation ACT: Veterans Family Days - $8,500 to run weekend veterans family days at the Veterans Support Centre at Page with a focus on actively seeking out younger veterans and their families in the centre.
  • Soldier On: Veterans Rowing Challenge - $4,000 to equip a veterans rowing team with training and support as part of the Canberra Rowing Club’s Corporate Rowing Program.
  • RSL Woden Valley Sub Branch: Eddison Day Club Technical Update - $4,107 to upgrade technical equipment for their Eddison Day Club for veterans.
  • Lifeline Canberra: R2MR Training for Canberra Veterans - $10,000 to run R2MR (Road to Mental Readiness) Training aimed at skilling Canberra veterans in conversations around mental health and suicide.
  • South Canberra Veterans Shed: Workshop Equipment Upgrades - $7,200 to upgrade workshop equipment.
  • The Boots N'All Choir: Strong Together in Song project - $10,000 to provide resources and a safe space for veterans, their families and first responders to sing together.

Further veterans grants of up to $2,000 are currently available for organisations which support veterans and their families.
