New members appointed to Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing

Minister for Seniors and Veterans Gordon Ramsay has today announced the creation of the 2019-21 Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing.

The Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing provides strategic advice to the Minister for Seniors on issues affecting older citizens in the ACT.

The Council will be Chaired by Distinguished Professor (Health and Ageing) from the University of Canberra Diane Gibson and Elle Burgess from Relationships Australia (Canberra and region) will be the new Deputy Chair.

The Council has been instrumental in developing the Government’s Age-Friendly Canberra: A Vision for Our City, which set’s the agenda for the next phase of work to optimise opportunities for social inclusion, good health, and safety for older Canberrans.

“I welcome our new members to the Council and thank ongoing members for their continued participation in developing policies and programs that promote a positive ageing culture in the Territory,” Minister Ramsay said.

“The membership’s diverse cultural and professional backgrounds reflect the depth and breadth of the seniors community in the ACT.

“Their life and professional experience will be valued by the Government and will ensure that our older Canberrans can remain positively engaged in the community.

“I’d like to especially thank outgoing Chair Fiona May for her outstanding work with the council over the past four years and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours.”

The new Council will bring expertise in the fields of medicine, law, social services, human rights, government and non-government sectors, aged care and volunteering.

The new Council will be comprised of seven women and three men and includes members from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
