Reinvigorating Kippax Centre

Released 25/03/2019 - Joint media release

The Kippax Group Centre Master Plan will reinvigorate the centre by encouraging business growth, improving community facilities and creating places for social activity.

Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman said the master plan had been designed to meet the Kippax community’s needs into the future.

“I’m pleased to present a progressive master plan that is a result of a collaborative engagement with residents, businesses and industry,” Mr Gentleman said.

“We’re growing Canberra’s economy and strengthening our communities by refreshing local master plans across the city. By focusing development in town centres like Kippax, we are protecting our garden suburbs from higher density housing and preserving the bushland surroundings that make Canberra special.”

Member for Ginninderra Gordon Ramsay said that the key recommendations include the creation of a lively community hub and retail expansion to support the small businesses and growing population in the area.

“The local community has been at the heart of the master plan process, particularly through input from the Kippax Community Panel,” Mr Ramsay said.

“The plan also suggests improvements to car parking, foot paths and bike paths to make the centre safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

“West Belconnen is growing and there will be more demand for services and facilities at Kippax centre. The nearby Ginninderry development, for example, will include around 11,500 new dwellings once complete.

“I spent many hours speaking personally with locals and I’m pleased to see that the final master plan pays close attention to the importance people placed of the natural environment, availability of parking, building heights, and the reinvigoration of recreation spaces around the precinct.”

Minister Gentleman strongly encouraged locals to read the final master plan and to provide feedback on the draft variation 361 that will implement many of the plan’s recommendations.

The release of this master plan with the supporting draft variation to the Territory Plan (DV361) marks an important stage in the ACT Government’s partnership with the Kippax community.
