Local Canberra artists are being supported by the ACT Government to create a virtual reality dance project, augmented reality art and more.
Minister for the Arts and Cultural Events Gordon Ramsay today announced the successful applicants across a range of art forms including visual arts, literature, theatre, music and dance.
“These diverse projects will help our local artists gain new skills, connect with international artists, try new and exciting ideas and develop new performances for the community to enjoy,” Minister Ramsay said.
Fifteen projects have received more than $300,000 funding through the second Arts Activities $5 - $50k funding round. Funded activities include:
- An international artist residency in Ireland for Julie Bradley to create a new body of visual art works
- Publishing a collection of literature work by Canberrans in the Cicerone Journal
- Developing an immersive virtual reality dance project CRONE, by Mirramu Dance Company
- An augmented reality artwork by Daniel Savage and Anna Madeline to create different perspectives of public spaces.
“This new approach to arts funding has been very well received by artists. I am proud that we have achieved such great outcomes for the community by providing more flexibility and more funding opportunities for artists,” said Minister Ramsay.
Local artist Brenda Croft said “funding support for arts and cultural practitioners is so vital, allowing us to realise the complex ideas that we carry around inside our hearts and minds; bringing dreams to bloom, rather than remaining imaginary fruit”.
“Thanks to the invaluable support of Arts ACT I am now able to bring a long-standing project to fruition, and in doing so, pay respect to my Gurindji/Malngin/Mudburra family and ancestors, for their sacrifices, determination and inspiration,” Brenda said.
Chiara Grassia said that Girls Rock! Canberra was grateful for ACT government funding, which would allow it to put on a 4th program for girls and trans and gender-diverse young people and foster the next generation of musicians.
“The funding will allow Girls Rock to increase the number of mentors and participants and build on previous successful programs,” Chiara said.

The next $5 - $50k funding round will open on 1 June 2019 and closes on 31 July 2019. Artists can apply for the up to $5k funding at anytime.
The next Program Funding round will also open on 1 June 2019 and is available to arts organisations that provide significant programs of activity to support and develop the arts in the ACT, and that strongly engage with the ACT community. Program funding is available for up to two years.
