Elsewhere – A celebration of Canberra’s creatives

Released 11/03/2020

A new showcase event will highlight the world-class work of Canberra’s creatives who have forged careers ‘Elsewhere’ after their humble beginnings in the ACT.

The ACT Government has invested $225,000 for the new event which is schedueled to make its debut during winter this year.

Minister for the Arts, Creative Industries and Cultural Events Gordon Ramsay, said he was excited for the event which would support local artists and celebrate the history and story of Canberra’s artistic talent.

“Canberra is a vibrant community which hosts exciting art in numerous public and private spaces,” Minister Ramsay said.

“The Government is proud to support our local arts community and I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how far some of our talent has come, when they make their return to Canberra.

“Much of this work is by talented local artists, many of whom are recognised and celebrated nationally and internationally, and I’m pleased the Government is able to support their endeavours.”

Over two weeks in July, Elsewhere will present a select and succinct program of new, major works and performances by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists who began or built their careers in Canberra.

The locations of the performances and exhibitions will be as varied as the artists themselves.

The program is curated by Creative Producer Yolande Norris, who has fifteen years’ experience as a producer and curator and currently works with artsACT, the ACT Government’s arts agency.

Yolande has worked across many arts organisations and projects in the ACT, most notably as a founding producer of You Are Here festival.

Quotes attributable to Yolande Norris of Creative Producer of Elsewhere:

Elsewhere will enable outstanding and established artists to ‘bring their works home’ to Canberra. The project will offer a rich narrative around the contribution Canberra has made to the national arts ecology.”
