Emergency response deactivated following Salmonella outbreak

The ACT Chief Health Officer, Dr Paul Kelly has today deactivated emergency response protocols at Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital following Canberra's salmonella outbreak.

"It appears that the outbreak case loads have peaked and that demand on Emergency Departments has normalised," Dr Kelly said.

"Additional cases may continue to be identified however, the acute response phase of current operations is considered over.

 "The Health Emergency Control Centre (HECC) will be stood down as of 1600, 15 May 2013 and Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital will stand down their respective Code Brown emergency plans as well," Dr Kelly said.

"Emergency plans are an important part of preparing for unusual events like this outbreak. They are activated when it appears that an event may require an additional 'surge' capacity from our health services to manage an acute event.

"I would like to stress that many cases of gastroenteritis will not require medical treatment and resolve themselves. However, if people require medical assistance they are requested to consult their general practitioner and only go to the Emergency Departments if they feel they are experiencing a medical emergency," Dr Kelly said

Additional after hours medical services are available from:

  • the Canberra After Hours Locum Service (CALMS) (fees apply). Bookings by phone 1300 422 567 after 6pm.
  • The Walk In Centre at Canberra Hospital. This is open from 7am-11pm with no bookings necessary.
  • Philip and Ginninderra Medical Centres are open until 10pm.
