Released 12/06/2012

ACT Commissioner for Fair Trading, Brett Phillips, has today announced the release of a range of new resources for heavy vehicle drivers in the ACT.

"I am pleased to announce the release of a new version of the ACT Heavy Vehicle Driver's Handbook as an education tool for the industry," said Mr Phillips.

The ACT Heavy Vehicle Driver's Handbook provides information for heavy vehicle licence applicants on topics such as how to obtain a heavy vehicle driver licence, passing the heavy vehicle road rules Knowledge Test, controlling a heavy vehicle, and dealing with emergencies.

"Changes to ACT road transport legislation have affected mass, dimension and loading limits for heavy vehicles, and the Heavy Vehicle Driver's Handbook has been updated to reflect this. While the new handbook is a guideline only, it is a very useful tool to begin the study process, and I encourage all prospective drivers to read the new handbook to assist them to pass the necessary heavy vehicle knowledge test to obtain the relevant licence," continued Mr Phillips.

Mr Phillips also announced the introduction of the new ACT Heavy Vehicle Rigid and Heavy Vehicle Combination Knowledge Tests, now available on the Road Ready website.

"The new knowledge tests regarding heavy vehicles are now aligned with the NSW Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Tests, and the National Heavy Vehicle Driver Competency Framework, providing more consistency for all involved.

"There are 45 questions in each test and applicants must correctly answer 41 questions to pass the test. In addition, there are a number of categories in each test and applicants must correctly answer all questions in the five mandatory categories to be able to pass.

"The availability of the knowledge tests online provides a more accessible avenue for drivers to obtain a heavy vehicle driver's licence, and I encourage the industry to make use of this resource in addition to the new handbook," concluded Mr Phillips.

The cost of the Heavy Vehicle Handbook is currently $13.10, while a heavy vehicle practice knowledge test is available for all applicants on the Road Ready website at
