Record of strong land releases continued in 2016

Released 30/12/2016

The ACT Government has released enough land over the past 12 months to provide for 4,515 extra dwellings to help meet housing needs as Canberra grows, Land Development Agency Chief Executive Officer David Dawes said today.

“Canberra is growing by about 5,000 people a year, and LDA staff have worked very hard over the past 12 months to make sure that we are meeting the ever-increasing demand for land,” Mr Dawes said.

“In 2016 the LDA released – 4,515 dwelling sites, including 1,365 greenfield dwellings in new suburbs like Moncrieff, Throsby and Coombs.

“Through the dedication of our staff and by using some innovative practices, we completed civil works early in Moncrieff and are on track to do the same in Throsby.

“This means people wanting to build new homes in new suburbs will get access to their blocks sooner than anticipated.”

Over the past 12 months the LDA has also released more than 100,000 square metres of commercial sites, more than 80,000 square metres of industrial land and almost 200,000 square metres of community sites.

After a strong performance in the first half of the 2016-17 financial year, the LDA is working towards meeting its land release targets for the third year in a row and the eighth time in the past 11 years.

“Meeting our ambitious land release targets is always a challenge, one that is affected by many variables, but we are very hopeful of continuing our excellent land release record,” Mr Dawes said.

“In the past decade LDA land releases have exceeded the actual underlying demand of 27,000 dwelling releases by more than 30 per cent.

“In the next 12 months we will continue to release a strong supply of greenfield and urban infill sites to allow Canberra to continue growing in a sustainable way.

“Early in 2017 we will start releasing sites in the two new suburbs of Taylor (Gungahlin) and Strathnairn (Ginninderry, West Belconnen). We will release more land in greenfield suburbs like Moncrieff and Coombs, as well as urban infill sites along Northbourne Avenue, in Forrest and further south in Greenway.

“In addition the LDA will release more cleared Mr Fluffy blocks in the first half of 2017, as well as more sites for community facilities, including aged-care.”
