Shortlisted Brickworks proponents embrace new consultation model

Released 14/11/2016

The proponents shortlisted to restore and activate the historic Canberra Brickworks Precinct in Yarralumla have embraced the ACT Government’s community engagement model ahead of today’s issuing of the request for tender, Land Development Agency CEO David Dawes said today.

Both proponents, Doma Group and a consortium of Coda Property Group, Lendlease and Canberra Contractors, met with the community panel last month and will have more meetings with the panel as they refine their proposals for the Brickworks and adjoining blocks.

The panel, which includes community groups such as the Yarralumla Residents Association, the Inner South Community Council, the National Trust, See Change Inner-South, the Geological Society of Canberra and Pedal Power ACT, helped create precinct objectives that set out community expectations for the development.

“The panel’s help in assessing the five proposals against the objectives was critical in the shortlisting process,” Mr Dawes said.

“I am pleased that the shortlisted proponents recognise the value of including the community’s views in their final tenders.

“After their first meeting with the panel the shortlisted proponents indicated they would like further meetings with the panel during the request for tender process.”

The Brickworks development will renew an ageing area of Canberra, giving a piece of our heritage back to the wider Canberra community and increasing the overall supply of homes in the ACT. It is part of the Government’s commitment to urban renewal that will make Canberra a more compact, liveable and sustainable city.

“The shortlisted proposals from Doma and Coda provided distinct solutions to create a new Canberra destination that will provide access to its industrial heritage and I am looking forward to seeing how the successful proposal revitalises this precinct,” Mr Dawes said.

The proposals offered quality public areas, increased access to the area’s heritage and a range of residential dwelling types such as single detached houses, townhouses and apartments.

The request for tender for the Canberra Brickworks precinct will close on 16 January 2017.  A preferred tenderer is expected to be selected in early 2017.

The Land Development Agency will continue to work with the community panel during the tender stage of this sales process.
