Released 17/12/2018 - Joint media release

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris and Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury today welcomed the appointment of Ms Bernadette McDonald as Chief Executive Officer of Canberra Health Services.

Ms McDonald has been the Interim CEO of CHS since 1 October 2018, when Canberra Health Services and ACT Health became two separate and distinct organisations.

“I am thrilled that Bernadette McDonald will be staying on to lead Canberra Health Services,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The ACT Government is making a significant investment in health in the coming years and I look forward to continuing to work with Bernadette to make Canberra’s public health services even better.

“Bernadette has already made a significant contribution to CHS in the short time she has been here, with her leadership on important initiatives such as the Timely Care Strategy and the Occupational Violence working group.

“She is someone with significant experience in leading hospital and health service delivery, as well as policy and program delivery and it’s great to have her on board.”

Minister Rattenbury said he was delighted that Ms McDonald had chosen to continue the important work of ensuring our health services deliver high quality care for the Canberra community.

“I know our mental health staff have already benefitted from Bernadette’s leadership and I look forward to continuing to work with her as we look to grow our mental health services into the future.”

Ms McDonald said she was honoured to be offered and accept the appointment.

“I am delighted that I can continue to lead an organisation that is such an important and valued part of the Canberra community. An organisation with enthusiastic, hardworking staff who are committed to delivering the best possible care to the people of Canberra and surrounding regions, and who demonstrate this every day,” Ms McDonald said.

“I have really enjoyed my time here so far and I am looking forward to continuing to strive to make our services the best they can be in terms of delivering quality, safe and timely care for our community.”

Bernadette is a former Deputy Chief Executive Officer and acting Chief Executive Officer of Austin Health in Victoria.

She has an extensive hospital, health services, policy development and program management background and has occupied senior roles in Victorian hospitals and in the Victorian Health and Human Services Department.

Bernadette has a Bachelor of Nursing, a Masters of Health Administration, post graduate diplomas in Health Services and Health Systems Management, and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
