Canberra: it’s time to get Rail Ready

Released 05/04/2018

Canberra’s first light rail system will bring big changes to our road network, so it’s time for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and other road users to get Rail Ready.

The Rail Ready Light Rail Safety Program was launched at Gungahlin College today, one of the nine schools situated along the stage one route.

“Stage one of Canberra’s light rail network from Gungahlin to Civic is on track to be completed later this year. Two of the next major milestones for the project will be the electrification of overhead wires and vehicle testing,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris.

“This is a really exciting stage of the light rail project, but it’s important people stay safe and are aware of changes that are coming to roads, footpaths and pedestrian crossings along the route.

“The Rail Ready campaign aims to ensure people know how to keep safe when they are walking, cycling or driving near the light rail system. We also want to make sure people with a disability are able to use light rail safely and know how to navigate the system.

“Some important things to remember about the light rail system are that the overhead wires will be live so don’t go near them, after it has been raining the tracks may be slippery, and the vehicles are wider than the tracks so make sure you keep a safe distance.

“I’m sure for many of us this will be our first experience with a light rail system, so learning how to use it, being safe and knowing what to look out for will be really important.”

Minister Fitzharris welcomed a number of schools from along the route and their student Ambassadors for Light Rail Safety at the launch today.

“The students here today will play an important role in sharing the Rail Ready messages. As Ambassadors for Light Rail Safety they will be able to share what they learned today with their friends and family and help spread the word.

“If everyone follows the rules we will all stay safe when light rail starts in Canberra,” said Minister Fitzharris.

Transport Canberra and Canberra Metro are working in partnership to deliver the Rail Ready safety campaign to the Canberra community.
