Canberra Walk and Ride Week gets moving in 2018

Released 22/03/2018

Canberrans will be encouraged to walk, ride and catch public transport to move around our city during this year’s Canberra Walk and Ride Week (22 March – 29 March)

Starting today, a week-long festival of events will be held across the city to promote the benefits of being active.

“Canberra is one of the most active cities in Australia. This year we’re asking active travellers to buddy up with friends, family or colleagues to help them walk, ride or catch public transport as often as possible for any journey during the week,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris.

“There are many benefits to active travel – as well as the obvious health benefits of a more active lifestyle, walking or riding also saves money and reduces our environmental impact.”

This is the second Canberra Walk and Ride Week, which will also incorporate National Ride2School Day (23 March) – a great initiative for school children embrace a healthier start to the day by walking or riding to school either all or part of the way.

There will be a range of events to celebrate Canberra Walk and Ride week including:

  • The official launch in Garema Place
  • Guided bike commutes from designated Park and Pedal carparks to key work locations with Pedal Power Buddies
  • A film night hosted by the National Film and Sound Archive
  • Shared path pop ups where you can drop in and chat to the Active Travel Office about walking and cycling in Canberra (and grab a coffee at the same time)

Minister Fitzharris encouraged Canberrans to try something new during the week.

“Why not take advantage of our great Bike and Ride facilities and on-bus bike racks fitted to Transport Canberra buses. You could also walk with your kids to school along one of our Active Streets walking routes.

“There are so many options for people to make a positive change in the way they commute to work or get to school.”
