More essential services for Canberra’s growing suburbs

Released 23/05/2018

Canberrans will be able to enjoy neater, greener suburbs with more trees, more mowing and more suburban maintenance to be funded in the upcoming ACT Budget.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said the ACT Government understands the need to keep delivering high quality services and amenities in every suburb across the city.

“With around 4,000 new homes being added to our city every year, it’s vital we continue to invest in more mowing, weeding, graffiti removal, cleaning of bus shelters and the maintenance of local parks and trees in each Budget,” said Minister Fitzharris.

“This year, our city services funding will continue to grow to ensure we can deliver the essential services the community expects in our established suburbs that have expanded, and in new, greenfield residential developments.”

The ACT Government employs 681 city services workers to help maintain our city and suburbs. The $19.8 million funding boost provided in this year’s budget will step up the frequency of these services and respond to local maintenance works faster.

There will also be $300,000 for the ongoing maintenance of playgrounds to ensure they are safe and meet current compliance standards.

Minister Fitzharris said the Budget boost completes the ACT Government’s 2016 election commitment to grow services for our suburbs.

“Canberrans rightly expect high quality services no matter where they live, and this Budget continues our track record of increasing support each year to deliver more mowing, more weeding and more maintenance of our suburbs.

“Over the next four years we will deliver even more services across Canberra’s new and established suburbs to ensure we keep up with growing demand.

“The 2018 Budget will also provide $377,000 to commence delivery on our election commitment to plant an additional 1,330 trees. These will primarily be planted in residential streets where the urban forest is declining, improving Canberra’s unique green canopy and helping to cool our suburbs.

“The ACT Government is delivering the services our growing city needs through the 2018 Budget,” said Minister Fitzharris.
