More than 3,000 new skill training places now open to Canberrans

Released 20/02/2018

Enrolments for Skilled Capital are now open for 2018, offering 3,405 Canberrans the opportunity to get the skills they need to prepare them for the jobs of the future.

Skilled Capital offers Canberrans the opportunity to access high quality training in industries of high skills needs such as community services, information technology, cyber security, health and construction.

“Through this release, 103 registered training organisations (RTOs) are eligible to access government funding to deliver training in 81 qualifications.

“This will provide an opportunity for over 3,000 Canberrans to upskill and get a job in one of the many areas across our growing and diversifying economy.

“Following consultation with industry, we have added the Graduate Certificate in Networking and Cyber Security into the program, to help address a skills shortage in Canberra’s growing Cyber Security industry.

“With more than 11,000 cyber security jobs anticipated across the country by 2020, we have a great opportunity to take the lead on addressing this skills shortage right here in Canberra, with a view to attracting and retaining talented people as members of our community,” said Minister Fitzharris.

Since its inception, the Skilled Capital program has seen over 6,300 students and 50 RTOs participate, which is a reflection of the high quality vocational education and training sector we have in the ACT.

92.4 per cent of ACT VET graduates are in employment or have gone onto further study – the highest rate in Australia – according to the 2018 Productivity Commission Report on Government Services.
