The ACT Government is continuing the renewal of Canberra’s suburbs and town centres through the 2018 Budget, with a new Belconnen Bikeway, and Woden and Tuggeranong town centre upgrades aimed at upgrading local infrastructure and improving local cycling and footpath connections, encouraging more active lifestyles.
“Our town centres help make Canberra one of the most liveable cities in the world, and the ACT Government will continue to make investments that draw people into our town centres and support local businesses,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris.
“In Belconnen, we will deliver a fully integrated active travel loop, which links the town centre, Lake Ginninderra foreshore and the region’s sport and study institutions. This extends and completes the design work already underway on the Belconnen Bikeway which was a 2016 election commitment.
“These new works will deliver a network that improves the Belconnen town centre and provides better links with suburbs like Bruce, Macquarie, Page and Florey.
“In Woden, further investments will also be made with a new separated cycleway and verge improvements along Corinna Street from Furzer Street to Callam Street. We will also widen the cycle paths on Melrose Drive and Ball Street and complete other priority works identified in the Woden Town Centre Master Plan to improve the streetscape.
“We are investing now in the Woden town centre in anticipation of light rail from Civic to Woden and to encourage more active lifestyles in the Woden community, by providing inviting, safe and appropriate active travel infrastructure.
“In Tuggeranong, we will revitalise cycling and pedestrian connections from Anketell Street to Lake Tuggeranong via the Town Square, convert paved areas around the Tuggeranong Arts Centre to grass to create more green space and provide new paths to link the Lakeside Leisure Centre with the Lake Tuggeranong shared path. Further investments will also be made to upgrade Anketell Street.”

In Civic, the City Renewal Authority will deliver the next phase of the revitalisation of the heritage listed Sydney and Melbourne Buildings, as well as streetscape improvements in Braddon around Haig Park. The Authority will also receive a boost to roll out more events and activations across the City, Dickson and Braddon precincts following the popularity of early initiatives like the pop-up park in Garema Place.
“These town centres will also benefit from new funding for Canberra’s urban renewal and city services teams to implement new initiatives such as the creation of micro parks and citizen-led placemaking programs,” Minister for Urban Renewal Mick Gentleman said.
“The vital ingredient for urban renewal and creating activity in our town centres is people. These investments will create more attractive public spaces that bring Canberrans together.”
This $33.8 million investment, which includes over $21 million for active travel, is another way the ACT Government is revitalising our city as it grows through the 2018 Budget.
