Public transport patronage breaks records in CBR

Released 02/05/2019

Transport Canberra recorded more boardings across its public transport network than ever before on Tuesday 30 April as Canberrans throw their support behind the new network.

Across bus and light rail there were 90,854 boardings, according to MyWay data, the first time boardings have exceeded 90,000 on a single day since the system was introduced.

“I’m really pleased with these initial figures. Passengers are voting with their feet and using the new network in record numbers,” Minister for Transport Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The record figure includes 16,549 boardings on light rail. That means we’re already surpassing business case estimates two years ahead of schedule.

“These record breaking early figures show that a high frequency network is the right network for Canberra. There’s also no doubt Canberrans love light rail.”

The number of school student boardings has also increased since the corresponding time last year and the number using high frequency rapid buses has almost doubled.

“Transport Canberra is keeping a close eye on the network, recognising that this has been a change for a number of existing users. There may be isolated issues, and if so, Transport Canberra is working with customers to resolve those. Transport Canberra will look at putting on larger buses and increasing light rail frequency to cater for demand.

“Transport Canberra also has additional transport officers, customer service assistants and Transport Canberra representatives at major bus interchanges to help customers with the changes and provide timetable information. Our TC staff, drivers and customer service officers are also actively looking out for students and offering assistance as they navigate the new network.

“But to achieve record boardings on only the second day of the new network is a great result,” said Minister Fitzharris.

These record figures may even be understated, with passengers being reminded they must tap on and off with their MyWay cards when travelling during the month of free travel.

Public transport is free for passengers using a MyWay card until 26 May.
