Released 22/03/2019

Want to be one of the first to ride light rail in Canberra?

Canberrans are being invited to enter the online draw to win a double pass and be one of the first to ride light rail in a Community Preview Loop on Thursday 18 April, two days before it officially opens to the public on Saturday 20 April.

The ACT Government is offering 150 double passes for the community to get a sneak peek and get on board to ride light rail in a full loop of the alignment.

>Minister for Transport Meegan Fitzharris will officially open the ballot today and encouraged families to get in their nominations before they close on Wednesday 3 April.

“Canberrans have seen the progress of light rail all the way from the planning stages to now seeing light rail vehicles running up and down the route as they complete their final tests. I know many people are eagerly waiting to get on board,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“This will be an exciting moment in Canberra’s history, and we want to give people the opportunity to experience light rail with this community preview, prior to the official launch.”

>Light rail will officially open to the public two days later on Saturday 20 April with a celebration of the start of passenger services and free travel for the community to come and try light rail from Gungahlin to the City.

Canberrans are encouraged to leave their car at home and take advantage of free buses that will run across the network to get people to and from the City and Gungahlin Termini.

Ballot entries close on 3 April and are restricted to one entry per person. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For your chance to win visit www.transport.act.gov.au and register your details.

Canberra charities are encouraged to email lightrail@act.gov.au for the chance to win tickets in a charity lottery.
