Canberra District Riesling scoops tops award at the 2017 Canberra International Riesling Challenge

Released 13/10/2017

The 2017 Gallagher Riesling from Gallagher Wines in the Canberra District has been named the Best Riesling from the Canberra District, the Best Dry Riesling, the Best Riesling in Australia, and the Best Wine of the 2017 Challenge at the 2017 Canberra International Riesling Challenge Awards Presentation held at the Hotel Realm in Canberra tonight.

Now in its 18th year, the Canberra International Riesling Challenge received 509 entries from 224 wineries across seven countries, including Austria, Germany, the United States, Australia and New Zealand wines, with some of the New Zealand wines coming from the region around Canberra’s Sister City, Wellington. For the first time we welcomed an entry from Hungary. This year saw a record number of Australian entries.

Under the guidance of Chairman of Judges John Belsham, seven judges from Australia, the USA and Germany and three Associate Judges, have tasted more than 500 wines over the last four days to find the best wines across a number of styles.

Locally, the Canberra District Wine Region, with over 140 vineyards and more than 33 wineries, presented a strong field of entrants. The Canberra District and surrounding region is renowned for its cool climate varieties particularly Riesling. Winning all of these awards is an exceptional achievement for Gallagher Wines, for winemaker Greg Gallagher and this result shows the great quality wine produced on our door step.

I am delighted the award for Best Wine of the Challenge went to Gallagher Wines from the Canberra District, and the ACT Government and Hotel Realm Award for Best Riesling in Australia was also won by the 2017 Riesling from Gallagher Wines from the Canberra District.

My congratulations also go to all category winners from this year’s Challenge. Canberra’s International Riesling Challenge provides successful entrants an internationally recognised mark of distinction.

Winning wines can be sampled at the ActewAGL Trade and Consumer Tasting between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 14 October 2017 at the Albert Hall.
