Celebrating a great Prep for Pre year for Canberra kids

Released 22/11/2017

Today I was thrilled to join parents and their children to celebrate the final Prep for Pre session for 2017.

It has been another great year for the program, which is aimed at parents and carers who may be wondering about their child’s readiness for school.

Prep for Pre runs for five weeks across Canberra and includes a preschool program for children and a parenting program for families. This initiative is a partnership between Child and Family Centres, the Child Development Service and the Education Directorate.

Preschool teachers, child and family workers, physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists work with parents and children to help make the transition to preschool a positive one.

Prep for Pre allows parents and carers to find out whether their child is ready to listen, follow instructions, play with other kids and happily separate from them.

Today we heard about communication pathways for families and schools, along with detailed information about what schools provide for children, particularly children with additional needs.

The children had a lot of fun and received a library bag, story book, Prep for Pre certificate and a hat for school next year.  We cut the cake and celebrated all the terrific work done by parents, children and Prep for Pre facilitators in 2017.

Prep for Pre will return for what I’m sure will be another great year in 2018.
