Northbourne’s Macarthur House demolition nears completion

Released 03/10/2018

Above ground demolition work of Macarthur House on Northbourne Avenue is expected to be completed this week.

The Macarthur House site has great urban renewal potential, with close access to light rail, public open space, shops and employment hubs in Civic and Dickson.

The project has seen a number of initiatives delivered whilst demolishing a significant site in one of Canberra’s busiest traffic corridors. A target was set to recycle 95% of the demolished material, including concrete, metal, masonry, asphalt, small trees, shrubs and vegetation.

Current projections are that recycled materials will exceed this target.

Concrete, the main component of the demolition has reached a total of up to 15,000 tonnes and will be removed at a rate of 500m3 per day.

Extra care was taken to remove existing fittings and usable furniture prior to the demolition works getting underway, with equipment like air conditioners and fittings removed for use elsewhere.

I look forward to following the progress of this important site.
