UK study tour focuses on support for children and young people

Released 02/12/2018

As Minister for Children, Youth and Families, I will visit the United Kingdom and Ireland in December 2018, accompanied by my Chief of Staff and the Director-General of the Community Services Directorate.

The delegation will meet with representatives from local governments and community organisations providing services to children, young people and their families.

The visit will include a study of UK jurisdictions and Ireland that are leading the way in early support for families, restorative practice and services to the most disadvantaged children and young people in their communities.

The key focus is to learn more about successful reforms that are delivering both social and economic value by focusing on early intervention and strong collaboration between services and sectors.

The visit will provide insights to support work currently underway in the ACT around early support and reform of government and community services that support children and young people.

The delegation will visit:

  • Nottingham – an Early Intervention City since 2008
  • Leeds – a Child Friendly City - Putting children and young people at the heart of a strong economy, in a compassionate city
  • Glasgow and Renfrewshire – Getting it Right for Every Child initiative and Baby Box
  • Cork – Ireland – Young Knocknaheeny Infant Mental Health – Area Based Childhood Program
  • Cork – Ireland – Youth Outreach – a second chance at education for 15 to 20 year olds.

The cost of the Minister’s delegation is approximately $25,000. This is met from the ACT Executive 2018-19 budget. The final cost will be released as part of the regular travel reports.
