Young Canberrans meet for ACT Youth Assembly

Released 28/09/2018

Today 116 young Canberrans aged 12 to 25 are meeting in the Legislative Assembly for the 2018 ACT Youth Assembly.

The ACT Youth Assembly is a fantastic opportunity and a powerful platform for young people from diverse backgrounds and experiences to debate key issues.

The Youth Advisory Council identified four key topics for discussion throughout the day: civic participation, youth mental health, youth homelessness and equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

Today’s event is adopting a deliberative democracy process, aiming to draw out key ideas and policy recommendations while encouraging youth participation.

I know young people in Canberra care deeply about the future of our city, nation and planet and I am excited to follow the day’s events and the debates. I have no doubt the contributions from the participants will be well-informed, creative, passionate and smart.

It is essential these voices are heard so that we can better understand the challenges young people face and the opportunities they see.

The ACT Youth Assembly is co-facilitated by the ACT Youth Advisory Council, ACT Youth Coalition, Headspace and teacher and Aboriginal mentor Donald Bemrose. On behalf of the ACT Government I thank all of today’s participants for taking part and I look forward to following the progress of the ideas and debates that come from today.
