A picture of children and young people in the ACT

Released 15/03/2019

A comprehensive whole-of-government report was released today, highlighting the progress of children and young people in the ACT against key indicators. The biennial report includes data and trend information critical to informing ACT Government services and initiatives.

A Picture of Children and Young People in the ACT 2018 (A Picture) provides an overview of national and local indicators relating to the health, wellbeing, learning and development of children and young people between the ages of 0 – 25 years in the ACT.

Since the first report in 2011, the general trend for the ACT shows that overall most children and young people are faring well. Outcomes recorded in A Picture include:

  • more children fully immunised, with a significant rise for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, up from 89.1 per cent in 2016 to 96.8 per cent in 2017;
  • a greater proportion of Year 12 graduates employed or studying, up from 91.9 per cent in 2014 to 93.4 per cent in 2016; and
  • a decrease in the proportion of secondary students who report current use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs.

A Picture highlights some great successes and improvements. However, we know that some children and young people in our community remain at risk of disadvantage and continue to face significant challenges.  We will continue to work to address these and respond to the ever changing needs of children and young people in the ACT.

A Picture supports an evidence-informed approach to providing services for children and young people and underpins our commitment to ensure every child and young person in Canberra is able to meet their full potential.
