Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural, Leadership and Scholarship grants awarded

Released 29/05/2019

The ACT Government Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander grant programs support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to strengthen their cultural heritage, participate in lifelong learning and to become community leaders.

Four projects will receive a total of $11,000 in the latest round of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural grants. These grants support individuals and community organisations to run programs and events that promote a wider understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and languages in the ACT.

Successful applications include a group of local organisations who will hold a NAIDOC Week community event in the Woden Town Centre and the development of a resource kit to create stronger partnerships between ACT schools and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Alongside the cultural grants, the ACT Government runs a Leadership and Scholarship grant program throughout the year. This program encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations to undertake training and study that further develops their skills and qualifications.

Six individuals will receive a total of $13,199 in the latest round of Leadership and Scholarship grants. One person received funding for ICT equipment to finalise a Certificate III in Fitness.  Others received grants to go towards studying a diploma and Certificate III and IV courses.

These grant programs are supported by the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2019 – 2028 which outlines how the ACT Government works in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to address matters that are important to them.

Applications are now open for the next round of Cultural, Leadership and Scholarship grants. All members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Canberra who have an idea, initiative or desire to further their education are encouraged to apply.
