Brickworks reaches another milestone

Released 25/09/2019

Canberra's unique industrial heritage sites, the Yarralumla Brickworks, its Quarry and Railway Remnants, are a step closer to being sensitively conserved, reused and reopened to the public.

Today Canberra developer Doma has been announced as the successful tenderer for their proposal to restore and redevelop the precinct. The long-awaited heritage conservation works and surrounding residential development of 380 dwellings will now move to detailed design development including community engagement.

"The restoration of the much-loved Brickworks precinct will bring it to life again. The proposal for an onsite museum, new recreational uses and a mix of stand-alone houses, terraces and apartments will be sympathetic to the historic landscape and continue to tell the story of the Brickworks," Minister Stephen-Smith said.

The Brickworks played an important role in the development of early Canberra and the new development preserves its heritage for future generations. A community panel was formed in late 2015 and helped create precinct objectives which were included in the tender process. The ACT Government has agreed principles and obligations for project delivery by Doma who are responsible for delivering the desired and ultimately approved heritage outcome within the next five years.

"Urban renewal is the key to making Canberra a more compact, liveable and sustainable city. Projects like the Canberra Brickworks precinct demonstrate how renewal can unlock the distinct history and character of a place for future uses and the benefit of the wider community while preserving its past," Minister Stephen-Smith said.

Doma's priority now is to prepare a new Conservation Management Plan and present its tender concepts to community and regulatory agencies including ACT Heritage. For more information visit:
