Continuing the Reconciliation conversation

Released 24/05/2019

National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and a time to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving Reconciliation in Australia.

In 2019, the theme for National Reconciliation Week is Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage. This theme presents an opportunity to support a change in Australia that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have long called for: that is a comprehensive process of truth-telling about Australia’s colonial history. This theme encourages all Australians to consider our past in order to understand and heal historical wounds.

To continue the conversation about Reconciliation, the ACT Government is supporting a number of events and activities across the ACT including Reconciliation in the Park. The community event will be held at Glebe Park on Monday 27 May from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. A number of activities, workshops and performances are on offer, including a headline act by Melbourne pop duo, The Merindas.

The ACT Government awarded Reconciliation Day grants to 15 local organisations and community groups to run events and activities throughout the week.

These grants are one part of the government’s commitment to Reconciliation and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make real change. This commitment is further outlined in the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2019-2028.

I encourage all Canberrans to take part in the many events and activities across the ACT and to join the conversation about Reconciliation and how it can be achieved.
