Ground broken for $12 million health facility for Winnunga

Released 06/09/2019

Construction on the new $12 million community health facility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans will commence shortly.

Minister for Health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith joined Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services today for the soil turning, marking a major milestone for this important project.

The new health facility was a 2016 election commitment that is being funded by the ACT Government through a grant to Winnunga to build the facility that they will own.

Minister Stephen-Smith said the new facility would improve local health services for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

"Every year more than 5,000 people use Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community services.

"Local health care that is culturally safe and sensitive to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is incredibly important. This new facility will enable Winnunga to deliver even better services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans, in a way that is underpinned by self-determination and Aboriginal community control.

"The ACT Government has a strong ongoing partnership with Winnunga, and we are pleased to support the work they do through this new facility and almost $2.5 million we provide in annual funding," Minister Stephen-Smith said.

The new facility will enhance Winnunga’s ability to meet the increasing service demand and address the changing needs of health consumers.

Construction on the new facility is expected to commence shortly and be completed towards the end of 2020. Funding for this new facility was delivered in the 2017-18 ACT Budget.
